A Master in Finance Student’s Investment Analysis in Madrid

Global expansion is a key strategy for growing businesses, especially for companies operating in small markets. This was the challenge tackled in the capstone project “Expansion of Urban Haus: Investment Analysis in Madrid”, developed by Belén Licio, graduate of the Master in Finance ’24. The project explores potential investment analysis in Madrid, assessing strategic and financial feasibility.

A Capstone Project with Real-World Impact

This project explores the international expansion of Urban Haus, a Uruguayan clothing retail company. The focus was to determine the feasibility of opening a store in Madrid and conduct a financial analysis to assess the best investment analysis in Madrid—either through a subsidiary or a franchise model.

Key Objectives and Approach

The project involved:

  • Market feasibility analysis: Evaluating Madrid as a strategic location for expansion.
  • Investment strategy evaluation: Comparing a subsidiary vs. a franchise model.
  • Financial planning: Developing a financial plan and using profitability metrics to assess viability.
  • Business scalability: Overcoming Uruguay’s market limitations by expanding internationally.

Evaluating Investment Analysis in Madrid

By conducting an in-depth analysis, Belén provided Urban Haus with a data-driven framework for strategic decision-making. The insights gained will serve as a foundation for the company’s internal discussions and long-term expansion strategy. This capstone project highlights how proper evaluation of investment analysis in Madrid can influence business growth.

A Hands-On Learning Experience

Working on this project gave Belén first-hand experience in financial analysis, market research, and investment strategy—essential skills for anyone looking to make an impact in finance. Reflecting on the journey, she described it as challenging, rewarding, and fun.

A Transformative Experience

Reflecting on their journey, the team describes Venatici Crew as an exciting, fun, and eye-opening experience. By merging innovation with their passion for fitness and event planning, they have created a project that has the potential to revolutionize the way people experience the gym, both physically and virtually.

Economic Security in the Trump Administration

On February 27, Advantere School of Management hosted a timely discussion on Economic Security in the Trump Administration, in collaboration with the Georgetown Club of Spain. The debate featured distinguished speakers: Juan Luis Manfredi, Professor of Journalism and International Studies at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (moderator); Rubén López Rivas, Director of the Multilateral Business Development Unit at Deloitte Spain; and Alicia Coronil Jónsson, Chief Economist at Singular Bank and Board Member at Singular Asset Management SICG.

The Importance of Economic Security in the Trump Administration

Economic security has become a fundamental pillar of global power dynamics. Under the new Trump administration, policies are expected to shift towards a MAGA-nomics approach, focusing on American business interests and reshaping global economic relations. The debate explored key themes such as energy policies, manufacturing shifts, and international trade strategies, highlighting how economic security is now a strategic tool for national and international stability.

Key Topics Discussed

The Global Shift: From Globalization to De-Globalization

Juan Luis Manfredi set the stage by outlining the broader geopolitical landscape. With Trump securing both the Senate and the House, there is speculation about a new era of economic policy—a “MAGA-nomics” approach prioritizing American business interests. Discussions centered on energy policies, manufacturing shifts (microchips and data centers), and foreign relations, emphasizing the increasing role of economic security as a strategic tool.

Alicia Coronil Jónsson expanded on this by reflecting on the global economic transformation. She highlighted the “5Ds” she coined in 2022, focusing on the disruption of global order and de-globalization, which were once debated but have now become central issues. The current era, she noted, mirrors the 1920s in terms of geopolitical shifts, bringing Europe into a position where strategic independence and defense cooperation are more critical than ever.

The Emerging Tripolar World Order and Economic Security

The debate explored the rise of a tripolar world order, where the United States, China, and Russia emerge as dominant geopolitical forces. This shift poses challenges for European economic and political strategy, as Europe seeks to build a more self-reliant defense and economic structure.

According to Coronil Jónsson, China’s strategic silence in the face of global disruptions suggests it is positioning itself as an alternative partner for Europe. Meanwhile, the U.S. is expected to reshape multilateral banking policies, potentially reducing funding for global development initiatives and shifting its economic focus towards national priorities.

Industrial and Financial Implications for Economic Security

Rubén López Rivas provided insights into how American industrial and financial policies may evolve under Trump. He noted significant potential changes in multilateral banking, with speculation that the U.S. may reduce its contributions to international development banks, leading to restructuring efforts such as downsizing staff, deprioritizing climate and inclusion agendas, and reviving fossil fuel investments.

From an industrial perspective, U.S. policies may enforce stricter regulations on Chinese companies, affecting their participation in global markets. The conversation also highlighted China’s response, including the potential development of its own international development bank, modeled after the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), to expand its influence in emerging economies.

The Role of Europe: Challenges and Opportunities

Europe faces a critical moment in defining its economic and geopolitical role. The discussion emphasized the need for Europe to avoid substituting U.S. dependency with reliance on China. Instead, there is momentum for strengthening alliances with long-standing strategic partners such as Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Another key challenge is industrial restructuring and regulatory balance. While Europe’s strong regulatory framework ensures economic stability, it may also hinder innovation and competitiveness. The panel debated whether a reduction in overregulation could enhance Europe’s ability to compete in high-tech industries, particularly as China’s technological advancements now rival those of the U.S.

Conclusion

The debate underscored that economic security in the Trump administration is now an essential element of global power dynamics. As the world moves towards a tripolar structure, Europe must navigate its role carefully—leveraging its strengths in economic regulation, industrial innovation, and strategic alliances. The evolving economic policies under the Trump administration will play a crucial role in shaping this new landscape, with significant implications for global trade, energy security, and multilateral cooperation.

Transatlantic Relations in 2025: How Europe is Navigating Global Shifts

In February 2025, Advantere School of Management became a hub for one of the most pressing global discussions of our time. In collaboration with the Georgetown University Alumni Association Club of Spain and the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, we welcomed two renowned experts: Abraham L. Newman, Professor of Government at Georgetown University, and Joel Hellman, Dean of the Walsh School of Foreign Service. Their discussion peeled back the layers of the evolving transatlantic relations in 2025, dissecting how globalization, economic influence, and security are shifting under the renewed Trump administration.

The Changing Landscape of Transatlantic Relations in 2025

Joel Hellman wasted no time in setting the stage. According to him, the world today is undergoing changes as profound as the fall of the Berlin Wall or the aftermath of 9/11. The US has frozen humanitarian aid, recalled thousands of professionals, and redefined its foreign policy. But this isn’t just isolationism—it’s a recalibration of power, with strategic focuses on areas like the Panama Canal and Greenland.

Abraham Newman took the conversation a step further, emphasizing how globalization—once a symbol of opportunity—has been weaponized. Financial institutions and tech giants are now tools of economic control, and Europe must rethink its role in this evolving power play. The question is no longer just about economic competitiveness but about sovereignty and security in an increasingly centralized global economy.

Key Takeaways from the Discussion

1. Globalization as a Tool of Power in the Transatlantic Relations

Markets are no longer just about trade. They have become mechanisms of influence, controlled by a small number of powerful institutions. This centralization creates vulnerabilities that countries must address.

2. Trump’s Foreign Policy Playbook

The US is increasingly using economic and political coercion, not just against adversaries but also allies. However, history suggests that bullying tactics are not sustainable in the long run.

3. Europe’s Need for Strategic Action

With leadership vacuums in Germany and France, the EU must decide whether to continue reacting or take control of its global role. The next steps will define its long-term influence.

4. The Intersection of Technology and Power

The relationship between the US government and corporate tech giants is growing stronger. This raises urgent questions about Europe’s digital sovereignty and the control of critical infrastructure.

5. The Importance of a Coordinated Response

To counterbalance growing US pressure, Europe must act in unity. A strategic coalition, possibly including Mexico and Canada, could provide a stronger stance in global negotiations.

The Road Ahead for Transatlantic Relations in 2025

The transatlantic relationship is at a tipping point. For Europe, the challenge is clear: adapt to this new reality or risk being left behind. Strategic coordination, economic resilience, and strong leadership will be key to navigating the uncertainty ahead. The next few months will be crucial in shaping the future of global trade and security.

Master’s in Finance Project with Invesco: Real Investment Challenges

At Advantere, learning goes beyond textbooks. The Master’s in Finance project with Invesco is a perfect example of how students gain hands-on experience in real-world finance.

Our Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology immerses students in real-world challenges, equipping them with the skills and experience they need to thrive in the financial industry. This term, students from the Master’s in Finance collaborated with Invesco, one of the world’s leading investment management firms, and developed a systematic investment process from scratch.

What is Project-Based Learning (PBL)?

PBL is an innovative approach that places students in real-world scenarios. They must analyze problems, develop solutions, and present their findings to industry professionals.

At Advantere, this methodology is at the core of our academic philosophy. It bridges the gap between theory and practice while fostering critical thinking, adaptability, and teamwork. The Master’s in Finance project with Invesco exemplifies this hands-on approach.

Master’s in Finance Project with Invesco: A Deep Dive into Investment Management

For this PBL initiative, students were tasked with identifying an investment opportunity in the fixed income and/or equity markets. Their challenge was to identify an investment opportunity in a publicly traded market, build an investment process, assess risks, conduct portfolio simulations, and draft a prospectus for a potential mutual fund or ETF. They could choose to adopt either a passive (beta) or active (alpha) investment approach, analyzing key performance drivers along the way.

Throughout the project, students received guidance from Jorge Martin, Director of the Master’s in Finance, as well as top executives from Invesco, including Ricardo Rodríguez-Vita, Begoña Gómez, and Macarena Velasco. Their mentorship ensured that students received direct insights from experienced professionals in asset management.

Learning from Industry Leaders

The culmination of the project was a final presentation, where students showcased their work to senior executives from Invesco, including Íñigo Escudero, Head of Iberia, US Offshore, LatAm, and Israel Distribution. This exposure to real-world financial decision-making was invaluable for their professional development.

Reflecting on last year’s collaboration, Íñigo Escudero highlighted the fresh perspectives students bring: “The most important thing is that they think outside the box. It’s really refreshing.”

Students also recognize the impact of this experience: “The PBL methodology puts you in real-time situations, helping you understand the market, the office, and the environment. It’s hands-on training that shapes your future.”

By working closely with a global investment firm like Invesco, students in the Master’s in Finance were not just learning about finance—they were actively participating in it.

This is what makes PBL at Advantere a game-changer for future financial leaders.

Venatici Crew: Building a Positive Online Gym Community

The gym is more than just a place to work out—it’s a space for growth, connection, and self-improvement. However, many gym-goers struggle to find a supportive and positive online gym community that enhances their fitness journey. That’s where Venatici Crew comes in.

A Capstone Project with a Purpose

Venatici Crew is a capstone project created by Clara González, Paloma Pérez, Alejandra López, and Francisco Rodríguez from the Master’s in International Management ’24. Their vision? To build an online gym community that fosters positivity, motivation, and holistic well-being.

What Makes Venatici Crew Unique?

Unlike other online fitness platforms, Venatici Crew focuses on quality over rapid growth. Instead of simply increasing followers, the team prioritizes authentic engagement and meaningful interactions. Their second key differentiator is their holistic approach—addressing not just exercise but also nutrition and mental health, creating a well-rounded online gym community for gym-goers.

A Holistic Approach to Fitness

A lot of fitness initiatives focus only on one aspect—exercise, nutrition, or mental health. Venatici Crew integrates all three, providing a complete online gym community where users find support in every aspect of their fitness journey.

The Future of Venatici Crew

The team envisions Venatici Crew evolving into a fully functional app, much like Instagram, but exclusively designed for fitness enthusiasts. Users will be able to share their workouts, connect with others, and access expert guidance through memberships offering nutrition advice, exercise coaching, and mental health support—all within a positive and inclusive online gym community.

A Transformative Experience

Shaping HR Strategies with The Key Talent

Project-Based Learning (PBL) isn’t just a way of learning—it’s a mindset. Recently, students from the Master’s in International Management (HR) had the unique opportunity to collaborate with The Key Talent, an innovator in HR technology solutions. Their project focused on shaping HR strategies with The Key Talent by designing a strategic expansion plan for this dynamic company. Along the way, they didn’t just learn—they grew as future leaders in the HR field.

What’s So Special About PBL?

Imagine this: you’re not just studying theories in a classroom—you’re solving real-world problems for an actual company. That’s the beauty of PBL. For this project, students analyzed market trends, dissected competitor strategies, and explored how The Key Talent could expand its reach in the HR industry. As student Daniela Salas put it, “We researched competitors, studied how the market works, and identified ways The Key Talent could enhance its offerings to stand out.” This hands-on experience gave them a front-row seat to the challenges and opportunities of the business world.

What Did the Students Gain?

PBL isn’t just about tackling challenges—it’s about developing skills that last a lifetime. For Pedro Vigário, it was all about benchmark analysis and understanding the power of digitalization in HR strategies. “We learned how to analyze and structure key insights, which is critical when working with clients.”

Another team member, Nuzhat Tasnim, highlighted how this experience prepares students for leadership roles: “We worked with real data, studied the competitor landscape, and gained insight into market trends. This type of learning is so agile—it’s exactly what future leaders need.”

Why PBL with The Key Talent Matters

Partnering with The Key Talent didn’t just bring fresh ideas to the company; it also gave students a taste of the professional world. Marta de Bustos, Talent Analytics Director at The Key Talent, reflected on the collaboration: “Working with a young, international, and ambitious team brought us innovative ideas and new perspectives.”

Guided by Professor Robert Antonides, students combined creativity and strategic thinking to deliver a proposal they could be proud of. The experience? Equal parts challenging and rewarding.

3D Printing to Reduce Waste: The 3D Revive Project

Imagine a world where everyday products no longer face an early grave in landfills, but instead get a second life through innovation. This vision became a reality for the creators of 3D Revive, a groundbreaking capstone project developed by our talented students, Simon Arnold and Lucas Jeck, during the 2023-2024 academic year. Their project demonstrates the power of 3D printing to reduce waste and promote sustainability.

Tackling Waste with 3D Printing

3D Revive was born out of a shared passion for sustainability and a determination to combat the growing waste problem caused by prematurely discarded products. Their solution? Harness the power of 3D printing to reduce waste by producing spare parts for everyday items. This approach enables easy repairs and minimizes the need for replacements.

How 3D Printing Works to Reduce Waste

The project focuses on creating a seamless process for manufacturing spare parts using cutting-edge 3D printing. By doing so, products that would typically be discarded due to minor damages can be repaired, extending their lifecycle. This significantly lowers waste levels and supports the global demand for sustainable practices in both personal and industrial consumption.

“Our goal with 3D Revive is to tackle waste by combining innovative technologies like 3D printing. By producing spare parts for everyday products, we make it easier to repair them instead of throwing them away too soon, ultimately reducing waste levels.”

The Inspiration Behind 3D Revive

Driven by their deep interest in innovation and sustainability, the team brainstormed ways to address waste associated with everyday goods. Recognizing the potential of 3D printing to transform traditional manufacturing, they envisioned a world where consumers could repair rather than replace. This empowers individuals and businesses alike to adopt more sustainable practices.

Real-World Impact

3D Revive is more than just an academic project; it’s a model for how innovative thinking can solve pressing global challenges. By focusing on practical, scalable solutions, the team showcased how 3D printing to reduce waste can drive meaningful change.

As we celebrate this remarkable capstone project, we’re reminded of the power of creativity, collaboration, and commitment to building a better future. 3D Revive serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating how innovation in the classroom can lead to solutions that impact the world.
